A budding foodie
October 10, 2012 | Posted by Mabel under Just Noah, Parenthood, Weaning, Weaning progress |
He may be slow but it would appear that Noah is on his way to becoming another foodie like his sister. Since the last time I updated this blog, he has moved onto to fresh fruits like grapes, plums; raw vegetables like celery, carrots and cucumber as well as food items like French toast, puff corn cakes, bread sticks and rice cakes. I have also been adding puffed millet to his morning cereal to give it some texture, although I think it wouldn’t matter once water has been added to his cereals as it softens up the puffs considerably.
In the past, whenever we gave him anything like biscuits or Happy Baby puffs and rice cakes, he would take a few bites out of them and that was it. Most people would just give up and not be bothered but I am not most people. I continued giving him these things, knowing that in time, he’ll come to accept that he has to learn and adapt to eat food like his sister and every other adult. Slowly but surely, with plenty of patience and persistence, I’d say that we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
With this discovery, I decided to pushed the limits and introduce alphabet pasta. I was surprised by the outcome; he finished a large bowl of the stuff without gagging or looking sickly about the whole prospects of chewing his food. It looks like it is definitely okay to introduce texture in his food! Perhaps it’s time to experiment with slices of things like egg yolk omelette and soy milk pancakes?
New game plan

In an effort to keep things minimalistic with his food, I’ve decided to narrow down his food options to the following (based on this chart by Dr Jonja) just till we figure out how to tackle the eczema:
Grains
Rice
Millet
BuckwheatVegetable
Broccoli
Potato
Carrots
Sweet Potato
Yellow zucchini
Purple cabbageFruit
Rhubarb
Pear
Cranberry
Blueberry
Peach
All this, of course, depends largely on whether he has any reaction to it. So far, he appears to be okay with rice, pear, sweet potato and potatoes. And what about the purees in the freezer? I honestly have no idea what to do with those. Probably turn them into sorbets or as granitas or just give them to Eva as a cold treat.
I have also taken to making his purees thicker – somewhat like the consistency of greek yogurt or double cream – and that appears to have gone down well but only if I serve him spoonfuls of water at the same time. Cheek little thing!
Lets hope that he’ll improve on his solids intake!

Date
28 June to 1 July
Item
Carrots
Category
Vegetable
Brand (if applicable)
Jarred and fresh.
Cooking & serving method
Steam chunks of organic carrot and puree with fresh water. Toss water leftover from steaming process (due to high contents of nitrates).
Reaction
Not positive. I reckon it’s on the sweet side so this needs to be served with other food items.

23 to 26 June
Item
Turkey
Category
Meat
Brand (if applicable)
Fresh.
Cooking & serving method
Using only the dark meat (thigh), braise/stew in the crockpot for at least 4-5 hours or until the meat is tender. Drain, freeze the broth and puree the flesh with some broth before freezing. Use in place of water with cereal, veg or fruit puree.
Reaction
Slightly positive although I suspect that it is either this or the apple that gave him a rash so will put this on hold until the rash clears up before I introduce this again.

Fruit
Brand (if applicable)
Fresh and commercial (mixed with other purees)
Cooking & serving method
Steam peeled fruit for 5 mins before pureeing.
Reaction
Okay only in small quantities, especially if the puree/compote is sweet to begin with. Suspect that it gives him a rash on his bottom so will hold off until he’s older.

Not a big fan. Probably because it is on the sweet side. Might have to mix this in with other foods.
